The unofficially official iPhone for China moved a little closer to being real…or at least some nicely faked images were made real and posted at Sina.com.cn.

Of course, lending credibility to the pictures, they were later pulled and replaced with a less revealing one. The iPhone is supposedly set to debut around September on China Unicom’s network, the second-largest operator in China.

One image shows the iPhone syncing. Note the iPhone is on China Unicom’s 3G network, and will never be on a Wi-Fi network. That was a main sticking point in negotiations. Along with that previously reported news, there are a few more details from Macworld.

The iPhone is supposedly a WCDMA model. It bears the seal of approval of Chinese environmental regulators for a period of ten years. Other rumors floating around suggest Apple will be paid around $440 for each phone, though selling price will be less. Supposedly, China Unicom has a multi-year deal and has guaranteed a minimum of one million units sold per year. However, it should be noted that officially Apple and China Unicom are still in talks. Still, it’s hard to disbelieve one’s eyes.

The iPhone Dev-Team has confirmed that you can re-use the same version of redsn0w that you used to jailbreak 3.0 to jailbreak 3.0.1., you just have to do a little extra work. To jailbreak, all you need to do is install iPhone OS 3.0.1, launch redsn0w, and then when asked to select an IPSW file, select your 3.0 IPSW instead of 3.0.1 (assuming you still have it on your computer). That’s it! And, since 3.0.1 doesn’t touch the baseband, you can take it one step further if you wish and use the current version of ultrasn0w to do a soft unlock.

All of this is capable thanks to OS 3.0.1 essentially being a carbon copy of 3.0, just with a little extra code to patch that icky SMS bug. More detailed information about jailbreaking and unlocking OS 3.0.1 can be found on the Dev-Team’s blog.

The news came from an O2 spokesperson, an iPhone wireless carrier in the U.K.

An O2 spokesperson said the patch would be available Saturday through iTunes. ”We will be communicating to customers both through the website and proactively,” the spokesperson added. ”We always recommend our customers update their iPhone with the latest software and this is no different.”

The bug doesn’t only affect iPhones, however, it’s just that the media has focused on Apple’s device more than others. Google’s Android is susceptible and so are Windows Mobile phones. Apparently Google has already taken steps to fix the exploit.

As revealed by cybersecurity experts Charlier Miller and Collin Mulliner, the problem is in the way the iPhone handles SMS data. Hackers may be able to remotely control your device without you even knowing by sending a series of text messages, and the only way to be absolutely certain you are safe is to shut your device off.

Both Miller and Mulliner had warned Apple about the bug about a month ago, but as always with Apple, they failed to respond. The duo decided to reveal the bug at this year’s Black Hat conference in Las Vegas in hopes that the information would help speed up the patching process and help bring more attention to the possibility of other SMS hacks.

Saturday is only a day away.

In a TV ad Apple claimed that the iPhone had apps for “just about anything”. Fans of the Google Android, or at least ten of them, complained that their phone offered a similar and equal function.

Apple responded that it made the claim “only on the iPhone” because its App Store “provided users with a unique experience unmatched by any other application marketplace, including the Android Market”.

“Because Apple had shown there were far more applications available for the iPhone than the G1 phone, and user experience of the iPhone and the App Store was distinct from its competitor, we concluded that the claim ‘only on the iPhone’ was justified and not misleading,” said the ASA in its ruling.

The Apple App Store has about 50,000 applications, while Google offers about 2,100.

In the past, Apple hasn’t done too well with the ASA. In November an iPhone ad was banned for misleading customers about the speed of the phone on the internet. Apple also had to pull ads for its first generation iPhone in August of 2008.
