China iPhone Hits the Web

The unofficially official iPhone for China moved a little closer to being real…or at least some nicely faked images were made real and posted at Sina.com.cn.

Of course, lending credibility to the pictures, they were later pulled and replaced with a less revealing one. The iPhone is supposedly set to debut around September on China Unicom’s network, the second-largest operator in China.

Jailbreak Ready for 3.0.1

Those of you who have declined to indulge in iPhone OS 3.0.1 for fear of losing your jailbreak, you will be pleased to know that you have no need to worry.  The Dev-Team has gone ahead and given you the green light to update and jailbreak using the tools already available at your disposal.

The iPhone Dev-Team has confirmed that you can re-use the same version of redsn0w that you used to jailbreak 3.0 to jailbreak 3.0.1., you just have to do a little extra work.  To jailbreak, all you need to do is install iPhone OS 3.0.1, launch redsn0w, and then when asked to select an IPSW file, select your 3.0 IPSW instead of 3.0.1 (assuming you still have it on your computer).  That’s it!  And, since 3.0.1 doesn’t touch the baseband, you can take it one step further if you wish and use the current version of ultrasn0w to do a soft unlock.

Apple To Release iPhone SMS Bug Fix On Saturday?

Only a day after two cybersecurity experts revealed a SMS bug in the iPhone that may allow the device to be hijacked, the BBC is reporting that Apple will be issuing a fix for it as early as Saturday via iTunes.

The news came from an O2 spokesperson, an iPhone wireless carrier in the U.K.

An O2 spokesperson said the patch would be available Saturday through iTunes.  ”We will be communicating to customers both through the website and proactively,” the spokesperson added.  ”We always recommend our customers update their iPhone with the latest software and this is no different.”

The bug doesn’t only affect iPhones, however, it’s just that the media has focused on Apple’s device more than others.  Google’s Android is susceptible and so are Windows Mobile phones.  Apparently Google has already taken steps to fix the exploit.

The new 2TB Time Capsule is available immediately and is shipping today from Apple’s online store. This should hopefully be a welcome addition for those who back up many computers with Time Machine, as many use more than 1TB for their Time Machine backups.

The U.K. advertising watchdog, the Advertising Standards Authority, says Apple is correct when it claims its App Store is better than the Google store for the Android.

AVG Anti-Virus Update Confuses iTunes With Malware

9to5Mac is reporting that the latest virus signature updates to the popular AVG Anti-Virus (Windows-only) is misconstruing a couple of core iTunes files for malware. There’s a whole forum thread on Apple’s support website dedicated to this issue and while no fix or update from AVG has been released, the recommended workaround is to exclude the iTunes directory from being scanned within AVG at least until updated virus signatures are released. As you might have guessed, this is a Windows-only problem and does not affect Mac users.
